Waste Pro is the city’s solid waste contractor and collects all three streams in Germantown: household trash, recycling and yard debris. They go out on the same day each week, and everything must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Questions, missed pickups and cart changes go to the city’s customer service line.

Your collection day
Germantown is split into collection areas served Monday through Friday. The quickest way to find your day is the city’s Waste Wizard: type your address into the calendar tab to see your schedule, or type the name of an item to see whether it goes in the trash, the recycling or somewhere else. The city also posts a collection map, dated 2017; the Waste Wizard is the current word.
New residents choose their garbage service when they set up water service with the city, so trash is billed on the same city utility bill.
What is included
A new five-year contract took effect July 1, 2026. According to the city’s service changes page and its one-page summary, the standard service is:
- one green 96-gallon trash cart and one blue recycling cart (64 or 96 gallons)
- weekly trash, recycling and yard waste collection
- weekly bulk item pickup, up to five cubic yards
- optional backdoor trash service
All trash and recycling must fit inside city-issued carts with the lid closed. Material outside the carts is not collected; bulk items are the exception. Carts must be stored behind the front line of the house, out of sight from the street, under city ordinance.
| Service | Monthly rate since July 1, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Standard weekly curbside service | $51.85 |
| Weekly backdoor collection | $74.70 |
| Condominiums (no yard debris collection) | $36 |
| Each extra trash or recycling cart | $7.75, plus a one-time $75 delivery fee |
Households may have up to two trash carts and two recycling carts. An optional brown yard waste cart, one per household, has no monthly fee but carries the one-time $75 delivery fee, paid to Waste Pro. Backdoor service includes one 64-gallon trash cart; recycling and yard waste stay curbside. Residents with a certified medical restriction may qualify for backdoor service at a discounted rate if no one in the household can move carts to the curb; call 901-757-7200 for the application.
Yard waste
- Weekly limit: 10 cubic yards or 50 bags.
- Use clear 39-gallon yard waste bags or the yard waste cart.
- Limbs must be under 6 feet long and under 12 inches in diameter.
Bulk pickup
Bulk items are collected every week, up to five cubic yards. Furniture and appliances are accepted. Bagged trash and cardboard are not bulk, and construction or demolition debris such as fencing and shingles is not part of residential service.
For the larger cleanouts, the city and its Environmental Commission run Amnesty Dumpster and Recycling Day each April and September, at the Public Services complex, 7700 Southern Ave., and Johnson Road Park, 2970 Johnson Road. Both sites take building materials, fencing, wire, steel poles, tires without rims, concrete, dirt, rocks, lawn mowers, bikes and grills. Johnson Road Park also takes up to three bankers boxes of documents for shredding and electronics for recycling (one monitor and one TV at most). Proof of Germantown residency is required.
Household hazardous waste
Paint, chemicals and other hazardous items are handled by Shelby County, not the city. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 6305 Haley Road in Memphis is open to Shelby County residents Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your car tag and ZIP code to show county residency. The county lists these limits:
- 100 pounds per vehicle every 30 days
- latex paint is no longer accepted; dry it out and put it in your trash in a separate bag
- no televisions; one monitor, one keyboard and one computer per family every 30 days
- residential waste only
The facility is closed Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26, and Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24.
