Public schools for Germantown residents are run by Germantown Municipal School District (GMSD), the city’s own district, with its office at 3350 S. Forest Hill-Irene Road, 901-752-7900. It has seven schools: three elementary schools, Riverdale K-8, Houston Middle, Houston High and a virtual school, and nearly 6,000 students, according to the district’s About page.
The district says GMSD serves all residents of the City of Germantown, so check the street address, not the ZIP code or the mailing city. The district’s school zone locator shows the zoned elementary, middle and high school for an address, and says so when an address falls outside the district boundary. The district calls its zone maps a guide; Student Services, 901-752-7889, can confirm an assignment.
Each school name below links to our page on the school, with its principal, report card, feeder schools, hours and calendar. For enrollment documents, the full calendar and school board meetings, see our Germantown schools guide.
How Tennessee grades schools
The grade in the tables is the overall letter grade from Tennessee’s 2024-25 School Letter Grades. The Department of Education says they give “a snapshot of how each school in the state is performing, including student achievement and academic growth measures for all schools, as well as a measure of college and career readiness just for high schools,” according to its December 2025 release. Each school’s full report card is on the Tennessee State Report Card. Enrollment is the state’s 2024-25 count; each school page also gives the federal 2023-24 figure.
